There are presenters who unfortunately think that a good presentation needs more slides and more content. My most favourite subject matter expert had five hundred slides to present in one and a half hours. Needless to say I stopped him at the pass!
When developing your content ask yourself what outcome you want? Consider what you would like your participants be able to do, know and refer to after this training? Ask yourself what the best way to achieve the desired outcome is, or ask me!
You’ll also need to put yourself in their shoes… If they've just had lunch they will feel full and likely be suffering from the post-food slump. As their bodies work hard to digest the food they’ve consumed, it has to be stimulated to take on any other functions like learning.
They've also probably checked phones and emails during their break and will feel a degree of distraction and stress. Your job is to bring them back into the room, get them refocused and ready to take action to complete the next segment of learning.
So how do you ensure your delegates are not bored and sleepy? How do you encourage engagement and action? One technique is to get them straight into an activity. (Be warned, this can sometimes be met with a little resistance, but don’t be deterred).
By getting your delegates to do something; not listen to you or watch a video, either by themselves or with someone else in the group you will prevent the training nightmare of after lunch slump. Give your trainees a short timeframe, the sense of urgency will help them focus, for example:
• Pair up, you have 5 minutes to create a presentation on xxx.
• You have 10 minutes to research yyy using the resources in front of you and then deliver a presentation to the rest of the team on what you have found.
• Your delegates should be given the opportunity to use flipcharts, whiteboards or tools (other than Powerpoint) to deliver their information.
• Then you can facilitate discussion on the topic.
• You can also invite the participants to be active learners and ask questions of their team mates.
The most important thing is to encourage "doing" rather than sitting.
